Small World

I just found out last week that one of my dearest childhood friends had a blood clot in her stomach. She spent a week in the hospital recovering from the clot and fasting to help her stomach heal. She tested positive for Antiphospholipid Syndrome (APS) - which is likely to be a genetic condition. APS is a disorder of the immune system and leads to excessive clotting and complications during pregnancy. She was not pregnant during her diagnosis nor was she a smoker. Interestingly, she had been using the NuvaRing for four months prior to her clot.

It breaks my heart to see a very close friend get this sick, but reassuring in the same breath because she and I will be support for each other in this lifelong endeavor.
